Dr. Dog – Warrior Man

Dr. Dog’s sixth album has more than a couple good songs (including “Lonesome”, “That Old Black Hole” and “Big Girl”) but the one wearing the most lavish coast of 60′s psychedelia is definitely “Warrior Man.” A computer boots up before the band slowly winds into their classic rock take of “Particle Man.” Okay, so maybe not, but there does seem to be some sort of tale between two competing men accompanying all the groovy organs and fuzzy strut. The beginning is even packed with little flourishes like Toby Leaman’s buzzy bass bubbles and Scott McMicken’s strategically placed guitar flares. Of course, the final chorus eventually makes way for a bit of shreddage and backup vox/organ interplay that could probably get pretty out there at a live show. If only this band was touring or something.
